Guide: rotating and straightening photos

How rotation is applied

The 90° Left, 90° Right and 180° buttons add to the current angle, so pressing 90° Right twice gives 180 degrees. The slider and the Exact box accept any whole angle from -180 to 180 degrees, where positive numbers turn clockwise. A preview scaled to 480 pixels updates as you go, and Reset returns to zero.

When you click Apply rotation, the full-size image is drawn onto a canvas just large enough to hold the whole rotated picture, so no part of it is cut off. At 90 and 180 degrees the width and height simply swap. At other angles the canvas grows and the empty corners are filled with white for JPG files, or left transparent for PNG and WEBP. AVIF files are accepted and saved as PNG. JPG and WEBP are saved at quality 0.92, and the file name records the angle, for example rotated-90deg.jpg. Everything happens in your browser.

Straightening a tilted photo or scan

For a crooked horizon, or a document photographed at a slight angle, find a line that should be level, such as the edge of the page or the sea. If it slopes down towards the right, try small negative angles; if it slopes down towards the left, try small positive ones. One to five degrees is usually enough. Because the canvas grows to fit, the result will have white or transparent wedges in the corners. Remove them with the Crop tool, cropping slightly inside the edges of the picture.

Photos that turn sideways after uploading

Phones often store a photo in one direction and add a note in the file saying which way is up. Some websites and older programs ignore that note, so a photo that looks fine in your gallery appears sideways after upload. Open the photo here, rotate it until the preview is upright, and download it. The new file has the pixels themselves turned and carries no orientation note, so it should display the same way everywhere.

Quality notes

Rotations of 90 and 180 degrees move pixels without blending them, so the only change is the JPG or WEBP re-save. Any other angle has to blend neighbouring pixels to fill the new grid, which softens the image very slightly. For that reason, enter the total angle once rather than rotating the same file several times. The Adjust again button goes back to your original image, so a new angle is always applied to the original, not to the last result.

Before you download

• If the image only needs mirroring, use the Flip tool instead.
• For a JPG with tilted corners, decide whether to crop away the white wedges.
• Need transparent corners? Convert the JPG with JPG to PNG before rotating.
• Check the final dimensions shown on the result screen against any form requirements.
