How this HEIC to PNG conversion works
On the first conversion the page fetches a HEIC decoder built from libheif, then decodes your iPhone photo locally and writes it as a lossless PNG. A full-resolution photo can take a few seconds on an older phone, because there are millions of pixels to store exactly. Nothing leaves your device.

Why convert HEIC to PNG?
Most people converting from HEIC want JPG, and for sharing that is right. PNG makes more sense when the photo is heading into an editor or a design file. Because PNG is lossless, you can crop, retouch and re-save as often as you like without the gradual quality creep that repeated JPG saving causes. It is also the format to use if you plan to cut out the background, since PNG can hold transparency once you remove it. The cost is weight: a photo stored as PNG is many times larger than the HEIC or a JPG, because every pixel is kept exactly as decoded.

HEIC to PNG file size: our test
We could not create a HEIC test file, so there is no measured HEIC size here. What we can show is how much a photo weighs as PNG compared with the other outputs, using our 640×720 test photo at this tool's settings.

As PNG, the test photo was almost seven times heavier than the JPG and about ten times heavier than the WEBP. A full-resolution iPhone photo has many more pixels than our test crop, so expect a PNG measured in megabytes. That is acceptable for an editing copy and impractical for sharing.
When not to convert HEIC to PNG
- Sharing on WhatsApp, by email or on social media. The PNG is very large and the recipient sees no difference; use HEIC to JPG.
- Uploading to forms with a KB limit. A photo-sized PNG will almost always exceed it.
- Expecting a transparent background. Converting does not remove anything; use the background remover afterwards.
- Archiving your photo library. The original HEIC files are smaller and keep extra data such as depth maps; keep those as your archive.

Should I pick PNG or JPG?
JPG for sharing, uploading, emailing or printing, because it is smaller and universally accepted. PNG for editing, because it will not degrade when you re-save.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC is a highly efficient compressed format, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. In our test the same photo was 326.3 KB as PNG and 48.2 KB as JPG, so a PNG many times the size of the HEIC is normal.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. iPhone photos have no transparent areas, so the PNG is fully opaque. PNG simply makes transparency possible: remove the background in an editor or with our background remover and it will be preserved.
