Guide: getting crisp, clean product images with the enhancer

The three stages inside the tool

This tool chains two AI models and a filter, all running in your browser. First, a background-removal model cuts the product out of its surroundings. Second, an ESRGAN-slim super-resolution model enlarges the cut-out to twice its width and height, predicting finer edges as it goes. Third, the enlarged image is placed on white (or left transparent, if you chose that option) and given a light sharpening pass.

You get a JPG when you choose white and a PNG when you choose transparent. The output is twice the dimensions of your original photo, so a 1000 by 800 photo becomes 2000 by 1600. The canvas keeps the same shape as your original; it is not cropped to a square. The first run downloads both models, about 45 MB and 5 MB, which are then cached.

Enhancer or Ecommerce Optimizer?

Both tools remove the background, but they are built for different jobs. Use this enhancer when you want a larger, sharper image, a transparent PNG for a banner or poster, or a non-square product image for your own website. Use the Ecommerce Photo Optimizer when you need a fixed square marketplace size such as 2000 by 2000 on white with a compressed file. You can also run the enhancer first and then crop the result to a square with the Crop tool.

Limits worth knowing

Because of these limits, open the download at full size and inspect the outline of the product, the corners of boxes and any thin parts such as handles or straps. Then read every word printed on the product. If a label has been distorted by enlarging, it is better to publish a sharp photo at its original size than a larger one with garbled text, because buyers rely on those details.

  • Upscaling sharpens what the camera captured. It cannot add stitching, printed text or fabric texture that is too blurry to see in the original.
  • Fine labels and small print can come out slightly distorted, because the network guesses edges. Check ingredient lists, sizes and brand names closely.
  • Doubling the size of a large photo takes longer and uses more memory. A 1000 to 1500 pixel source is usually plenty; very large originals can be reduced first with the Image Resizer.
  • Background removal can struggle with transparent bottles, shiny steel and products the same colour as the backdrop.
  • Transparent PNG files are larger than JPGs. Keep JPG for listings unless you truly need transparency.

Who finds it useful

Small sellers on Amazon India, Flipkart and Meesho often photograph stock at home on a phone. The enhancer turns those photos into clean images with a uniform background, which makes a catalogue look consistent. Handmade sellers on Instagram use the transparent option to place products on festive banners for Diwali or Rakhi offers. Shop owners making a printed rate card or a WhatsApp catalogue also benefit from the larger, sharper output.

White or transparent: which to choose

Choose white when the image is going straight onto a product page, a marketplace listing or a WhatsApp catalogue. A JPG on white is smaller, opens everywhere and matches what most marketplaces expect for the main image. Choose transparent when the product will be placed on top of something else later: a coloured banner, a festive offer poster, a slide in a presentation or a website section with its own background colour.

Remember that transparency only survives in formats that support it. If you later convert the PNG to JPG, the transparent areas become a solid colour. Keep the transparent PNG as your master copy and export JPG versions from it for each place you need them.

Before you start

  • Shoot in daylight on a plain backdrop that contrasts with the product.
  • Keep the product in sharp focus; enlarging a blurry photo enlarges the blur.
  • Crop out unnecessary space so the product is the main subject.
  • Decide on white (JPG) or transparent (PNG) before you upload.
  • Afterwards, reduce the file size for your website with Compress to Size if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the product photo enhancer do?

It removes the background to a clean white, AI-upscales the image for sharpness, and exports a 2× larger photo — all in your browser. Great for listings and catalogs.

Are my product images private?

Completely. All processing is client-side; nothing is uploaded. Your product shots stay on your device.

Can I keep a transparent background instead of white?

Yes. Choose the transparent option to export a PNG with no background — useful for banners and composites. For listing photos, white is usually required.
