Who needs a 2 MB image?

2 MB is one of the most widely used upload limits on the web. YouTube uses it for custom thumbnails, and PHP, the language behind WordPress and many Indian websites, ships with a default upload limit of 2 MB that many hosts never change. Modern phone cameras routinely produce 4 to 12 MB files, so this is often where an upload is refused without a clear explanation.

What to expect at 2 MB

For most phone photos there is no visible change at all. You are mainly removing excess from the file rather than detail from the picture. Photos from 48 or 50 megapixel cameras may need to be resized a little to fit, which is still far more detail than any screen shows.

Pixel count drives file size, so if your form states no dimensions, resize to one of these before compressing to 2 MB with the image resizer.

Which format to use for 2 MB

JPG, and keep the quality high. With a 2 MB ceiling there is no reason to compress aggressively; you only need to get under the line. For YouTube thumbnails, JPG is also accepted alongside PNG, and it is far easier to keep under 2 MB.

Worked example: getting a file to 2 MB

1. Start point: you designed a YouTube thumbnail and exported it as a 1280 × 720 PNG, and it came out at about 2.6 MB because of a detailed photo background.
2. YouTube rejects files over 2 MB, so the PNG cannot be used as it is.
3. Upload it here. The 2048 KB target, which is 2 MB, is already in the custom box. Choose JPG.
4. The result will typically be a fraction of 2 MB, often a few hundred KB, because the tool picks the highest quality that fits and a JPG at 1280 × 720 needs far less.
5. Check the text on the thumbnail for soft edges. If text looks blurry, the PNG design may need simpler colours behind the text.

• Uploading iPhone HEIC photos to a form that only accepts JPG. Compressing here also converts the result to JPG, as long as your browser can open HEIC.
• Compressing to exactly 2 MB when a portal counts 2 MB as 2,000 KB. If a file just under 2 MB is refused, type 1900 in the custom box.
