Guide: making a white background transparent

How this tool differs from the AI background remover

The AI Background Remover is built for photos: it recognises a person, a pet or a product and separates it from a real-world scene. Logos, signatures, icons, stamps, clip art and scanned drawings are different. They usually sit on a flat white or single-colour background, and they contain thin lines and small letters that an AI model trained on photos can blur or cut away.

This tool does not guess what the subject is. It looks at the colour of every pixel and makes the pixels that match the background colour transparent. Because there is no AI model to download, it starts instantly, works on large images up to 4000 pixels on the longest side, and keeps fine lines exactly as they are. Your file never leaves your browser.

Step by step: logo or image to transparent PNG

  • Upload a PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF or BMP. Use the largest, cleanest copy you have; a logo exported from the original design file works far better than a screenshot or a WhatsApp copy.
  • Choose the colour to remove. White is the default. Detect from corners reads the colour at the four corners, which is handy for off-white paper or a light grey backdrop. Custom lets you pick any colour, for example a green or blue background.
  • Adjust the tolerance until the whole background disappears in the preview but the subject stays solid.
  • Adjust edge smoothing so the outline looks clean rather than jagged.
  • Download the transparent PNG. Tick Trim empty space first if you want the file cropped tightly around the logo or signature.

What the settings do

Tolerance decides how close to the background colour a pixel must be to disappear. A low value removes only pure white; a higher value also removes light grey shadows, paper texture and JPG noise around the edges. If parts of a light-coloured logo start to vanish, the tolerance is too high.

Edge smoothing creates a soft band between "fully removed" and "fully kept". Pixels in that band become partly transparent, which hides the staircase look on curves and diagonal lines. The tool also removes the background colour from these edge pixels, so a black logo cut from white does not keep a pale outline when you place it on a dark background.

Keep the background colour inside the subject only clears background pixels that connect to the edge of the image. Use it when the subject contains the same colour as the background, such as white teeth in a face, white lettering on a red badge, or the white of a football. Leave it off for logos and text where enclosed areas, like the middle of an O or an A, should also become transparent.

Removing the background from a logo

Logos are the most common reason people search for a transparent background maker. A transparent PNG logo can sit on coloured website headers, slides, videos, T-shirt mock-ups and letterheads without an ugly white box around it.

Start from the highest-resolution logo you can find, because the tool cannot add detail that is not there. If the logo has a white shape inside it that must stay white, such as a white star on a blue circle, turn on Keep the background colour inside the subject. If the logo uses very light colours, lower the tolerance and raise the edge smoothing instead, so the pale parts survive. Check the result on both a light and a dark background in your design app before you use it widely.

Making a signature transparent

A transparent signature can be placed on a letter, an invoice or a digital certificate so it looks signed in ink. Sign with a dark pen on plain white paper, scan or photograph it in good light, and crop it close. Then remove the white background here with a medium tolerance, which also clears the grey tint of the paper.

Online exam and job forms are different: they usually ask for a JPG signature on a white background within a fixed KB range, not a transparent PNG. For those, follow our guide to scanning and cleaning a signature on your phone and use the exam photo and signature pages.

Which images work well, and which do not

  • Work well: logos, icons, signatures, stamps, line drawings, cartoons, clip art, product photos taken on a seamless white sweep, and screenshots of graphics.
  • Work with care: JPG files with visible compression noise (raise the tolerance a little) and scans of slightly yellow paper (use Detect from corners).
  • Not a good fit: ordinary photos of people or objects in a room or outdoors. The background there is many colours, so use the AI Background Remover instead.
  • Gradients and shadows: a background that fades from white to grey can only be removed where it is close to the chosen colour. Crop away as much of it as you can first with the Crop tool.

Common problems and how to fix them

  • A thin white line around the edges: raise the tolerance a few steps, or raise the edge smoothing. JPG files often have a light fringe of compression noise around dark shapes.
  • Holes inside the subject: the subject contains the background colour. Turn on Keep the background colour inside the subject, or lower the tolerance.
  • The middle of letters stays white: the opposite case. Turn the inside option off so enclosed areas, like the centre of an O, are cleared too.
  • Patchy grey areas remain: the background is not one even colour, usually because of a shadow or uneven light in a photo or scan. Use Detect from corners, raise the tolerance, or rescan in brighter, even light.
  • Jagged outline: the image is small or was enlarged before upload. Start from a bigger original; edge smoothing helps a little but cannot add real detail.
  • The file is larger than expected: PNG stores every pixel without loss. Tick Trim empty space to remove unused margins, or convert to WebP for a website.

Transparent PNG, file size and where to use it

The download is a PNG with an alpha channel, the standard format for transparency on the web and in Office, Canva, Photoshop and most video editors. Do not convert it to JPG: JPG cannot store transparency and the background will be filled with white or black again. If a website needs a smaller file, a WebP made with PNG to WebP keeps the transparency at a fraction of the size.

If you need the logo on a solid colour instead of transparency, place the PNG in your design app on that colour, or use the background options in the Background Remover for photos. For more on how transparency works in different formats, read how to create transparent PNG images.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove a white background from an image?

Upload the image, keep White selected as the colour to remove, and move the tolerance slider until the background disappears in the preview while the subject stays solid. Then download the transparent PNG.

How do I make a logo background transparent?

Upload the largest copy of the logo you have. If it is on white, the default settings usually work; raise the tolerance to clear grey shadows, and turn on the option to keep the background colour inside the subject if parts of the logo itself are white. Download the PNG.

Can it remove a background that is not white?

Yes. Choose Detect from corners to use the colour at the image corners, or Custom to pick any colour, such as a green or blue backdrop. It works best when the background is one flat colour.

Why are parts of my logo disappearing?

The tolerance is too high, so light parts of the logo are being treated as background. Lower the tolerance, raise the edge smoothing instead, and turn on the option to keep the background colour inside the subject if the logo contains white areas.

Should I use this or the AI Background Remover?

Use this tool for logos, signatures, icons, clip art and anything on a flat, plain background; it keeps thin lines exactly. Use the AI Background Remover for ordinary photos of people, pets or products in a real scene.

What format is the download?

A PNG with a transparent background. Keep it as PNG, or convert it to WebP to make it smaller; converting to JPG would fill the transparent areas with a solid colour again.

Is there a size limit?

Images up to 4000 pixels on the longest side are processed at full size. Larger images are reduced to 4000 pixels first. Everything runs in your browser, so very large images can be slow on older phones.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool works entirely in your browser with the canvas, so the image stays on your device. There is no signup and no watermark.
