Why convert JPG to WEBP?
JPG has been the default photo format since the 1990s and its compression, while good for its era, has been comfortably beaten. WEBP reaches the same perceived quality in noticeably fewer bytes — commonly a quarter to a third smaller on ordinary photographs. On a page carrying a dozen images that adds up to a real difference in load time, particularly on mobile data, and load time is something Google measures directly. The catch is the same as always: WEBP is for the web. If a file is going to be emailed, printed or uploaded to an old portal, keep it as JPG.
